What Does God Want?
Joel 1; 2:12-17
From our Family and Music Minister
Growing up in a small town, I have been surrounded by people who love to tell stories of the past. I quickly had to learn to fact check my stories after I went to school and told my teacher that my Dad was in the Civil War. (I guess I can blame my Dad for my ability to inflate the truth when I relay a compelling story.)
Another person that could spend hours telling stories of the past was Mr. Wayne Blue. Mr. Wayne knew stories about all the colorful characters from Ashburn’s history, as well as the history of our church. He was one of my go-to people when I had questions about our church history. (However, growing up with Paul Perry, I always listened with a deductive ear.) One of my favorite stories Mr. Wayne told was the installing of the current church steeple. (Understand, as he was telling me the story, I did not have pictures of the steeple’s installation.) Mr. Wayne told me that as the steeple was being hoisted in the air by the crane, the crane started to tip over! To help the dangerous situation, the company attached another truck to the front of the crane while people added additional weight.
Now, I understand in the early ’50s, the same safety standards may not have been in place, but this sounded completely unsafe and a story that became a little less factual in the retelling. So I just agreed, as I did most of the time, and life went on.
Unfortunately, when Scripture is taught, I feel like the same thing happens. We just agree because the preacher said it, but we don’t let it hold to much weight in our thinking. We tend to push it off as out-of-date information, or “it doesn’t relate to me”. This is especially evident when teaching younger people. Today, our young people are confronted by numerous worldviews that are in direct contrast with the Bible and even go as far as to say that a Christian worldview is unloving.
A few weeks back, the funeral home was cleaning out closets and came across pictures of the church. I immediately recognized them as pictures of the steeple installation. The few that we already had were on the same type of paper, the same size, and you could tell the book was missing some pictures. As I flipped through the book, I was amazed to see photos of exactly what Mr. Wayne had told me the whole time – he wasn’t embellishing the story after all.
Unlike the photos from the past, we have the evidence right in front of us here and now. Everything taught to us by a teacher can be verified in Scripture. Of course, you can say that it takes faith to believe the Bible is true. I think if you truly study the Scripture, it takes more faith to believe that it is not true.
Too many times, we want to discredit scripture because it steps on our toes way too much. It took me ten years to confirm the story I had heard from Mr. Wayne...don’t wait to confirm the teachings of your Creator. Study His Word to reinforce your relationship and knowledge of Him.
In the next few weeks, you may not be able to listen to a regular Sunday school teacher or attend worship services. But I challenge you to study God’s Word, listen to Bro. David on our website, and find other reliable teachings to help you continue to grow as a Christian.
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
