Pastor's Pen

What should we be doing as we go through this pandemic?  Obviously, we need to pray that the tide turns and that lives are preserved.  I hope we are checking on each other by phone calls, texts or emails.  We should be ready to help anyone who is sick – from a safe “social distance.”

What else should we be doing?  We are given some guidance in 2 Samuel 21.  In this chapter, Israel is facing a famine that has lasted for three years.  King David’s response gives us guidance about how to respond during this pandemic.

What did David do during the famine?  He sought the presence of the Lord (v.1).  I have no doubt that David had been praying about the famine for months.  But, this implies a deeper, more focused seeking of God Himself.  David more fully sought the Lord.

Next, we need to listen to the Lord.  As David sought the Lord, he heard from Him.  God revealed to David that the famine was His judgment upon Israel for King Saul’s killing the Gibeonites (verse 1b).

We need to listen to God in this time.  No, He might not tell us the specific reasons that caused Him to let the United States experience this virus.  But, He will reveal how He wants to use this time in our lives.

He may reveal sins that we need to confess and forsake.  He may reveal a calling that He has on our lives.  He may reveal that we need to change our priorities.  He may simply be reminding us about what is important in life.  God desires to speak to us.  These circumstances not only show our need but also our opportunity.

Last, we need to follow through on what the Lord tells us. For David, this meant satisfying the justice that was owed to the Gibeonites (verses 2-9).  For us, it could be any of the items mentioned above or some other issue the Lord reveals unto us.  Whatever it is, we need to follow through.

I have no doubt that God is desiring our attention in this time.  Will He have yours?
